Johnny Bannion, un Irlandais spécialiste des cambriolages de haut vol, vient de sortir de prison. Là, il a passé le plus clair de son temps à préparer le coup de sa vie. Un vieux complice, Mike Carter, rejoint la bande. Le braquage se déroule comme prévu mais, alors qu'il vient de cacher le butin dans un endroit secret, Bannion est arrêté par la police. Afin de savoir où se trouve le magot, ses complices, toujours en liberté, kidnappent sa maîtresse et le font torturer en prison...
