En 1774, Marie-Antoinette, épouse du dauphin, s'étourdit et s'amuse seule et incognito au bal de l'Opéra. Elle y rencontre un jeune officier suédois, le comte de Fersen, qui lui voue le plus indéfectible amour. Quelques mois après cette rencontre, le dauphin et la dauphine accèdent au trône de France. Marie-Antoinette se retrouve déchirée entre sa fidélité au Roi et sa passion pour Fersen.
