Une reine ressemblant quelque peu a Elisabeth d'Autriche erre de palais en palais apres l'assassinat de son mari. Un jeune poete est designe par les intrigants pour la supprimer. Mais lorsque, par hasard, ils se rencontrent, ils tombent amoureux l'un de l'autre, d'autant plus que le poete a des traits communs avec feu le roi. Ils s'aimeront jusque dans leur mort tragique. Filme avec les procedes employes pour les films de television "le Mystere d'Oberwald" a recu un accueil particulierement favorable de la part de la critique au Festival de Venise en 1980.
