Chaque annee les petits-enfants de Kane se retrouvent chez elle pres de Nagasaki pour les vacances. Cet ete 1990, Kane recoit une lettre de son frere Suzujiro emigre a Hawai. Tres malade il espere revoir sa soeur avant sa mort. C'est Clark, fils de Suzujiro et d'une Americaine, qui reussit a la convaincre de venir a Hawai. Mais pas avant le 9 aout, date anniversaire de la tragedie de Nagasaki qui causa la mort de son mari.
