Apprenant que sa mère vient d’être hospitalisée à la suite d’une attaque, Alan Parker, un étudiant aux pulsions morbides, prend la route pour se rendre le soir même à son chevet. Pris en stop par un déserteur, ils sont rapidement victimes d’un accident, à près de deux cents kilomètres de sa destination. Il n’en poursuit pas moins son chemin et, après quelques rencontres toujours plus insolites et effrayantes, croit à un nouveau coup de chance en embarquant dans une rutilante Plymouth Fury. Mais il va très vite prendre conscience que son conducteur n’est pas quelqu’un d’ordinaire…
