Dans une petite ville désertique du Nouveau Mexique, un homme est frappé d'amnésie après qu'on ait tenté de l'abattre. A la recherche de son identité, celui-ci devient la cible des suspiscions du shérif local tandis qu'une femme le harcèle en prétendant être son épouse. Mais au fur et à mesure qu'il collecte les indices, l'homme découvre qu'il pourrait être lié à une prochaine tentative d'assassinat du Président des Etats-Unis...
