Ils s'installent dans un pays récemment converti à la démocratie, où ils tissent des liens avec les hommes de pouvoir, corrompus pour la plupart. Seule exception : Patrice Doumbé, homme intègre, que Laurence ne tarde pas à prendre pour amant. Mais Doumbé représente une menace pour le régime en place.
