En 1942, pendant le conflit américano-japonais, le sous-marin du commandant Richardson est coulé par le submersible nippon, l'Akikaze. Rongé par ce mauvais souvenir, il se voit confier la direction d'un nouveau sous-marin, le Nerka, au détriment de Jim Bledsoe, son second. Après des mois d'entraînement intensif, Richardson a l'occasion de prendre sa revanche pendant l’attaque de Pearl Harbor.
