Dans la France du XVIIIe siècle, Fanfan, un jeune aventurier intrépide et fougueux, s'engage dans l'armée du roi, encouragé par la belle Adeline, la fille d'un sergent recruteur. En route vers le campement, il fait fuir des brigands qui tentaient de dévaliser le carrosse royal de Madame de Pompadour et d'Henriette, la fille du roi. Il y voit un signe du destin et tente alors de déjouer un complot historique. A la clé, la gloire et un amour inattendu...
