Jeune Américain chargé d'une mission humanitaire, Alden Pyle débarque à Saïgon durant l'automne 1952, au plus fort de la résistance vietnamienne, contre la présence coloniale française. Désireux de venir en aide à la population locale et de connaître le pays, il sympathise avec le correspondant du London Times, Thomas Fowler, pour qui le Vietnam n'a plus de secret.

Mais il est bientôt attiré par Phuong, la jeune maîtresse vietnamienne de ce dernier, aussi belle et mystérieuse que la ville de Saïgon. Les trois personnages pris au piège d'un triangle amoureux explosif, iront de révélations en coups de théâtre...

Now I will tell you a story about a little boy. He had a rattlesnake that he kept in a metal cage, whose hunger could not be satisfied. One day, the boy found five baby kittens outside his house. He brought them inside and kept them in a shoe box. He knew that the snake might kill them but could not bring himself to get rid of the snake. He knew that if he chose one kitten to feed to the snake he might be satisfied but he could not choose, so he went to bed leaving the cage open. The snake went to the shoe box, chose a kitten at random and ate it. After five nights had gone by, the boy was full of regret and cut snake open. He'd paste the remains together and put the kitten back into the shoe box."
