Octave et ses amis, Achille et Hector, déambulent la nuit dans les épiceries-buvettes, les restaurants d'habitués et les bars glauques.
Octave fait par hasard la connaissance d'Esther. Ces deux personnes ont des caractères diamétralement opposés. Elle est belle, cultivée, libre, créative, tandis que lui est grossier, violent et pleurnichard.
Ce dernier en tombe amoureux. La partie s'annonce difficile.
