1947, Londres après-guerre, Vivian Pearce, mariée avec Reggie, gère une agence avec Helen Giniver qui vit avec sa vieille maîtresse l’écrivaine Julia Standing. Le jeune frère de Vivian, Duncan, homosexuel tourmenté, est recherché par son ancien compagnon de cellule, Robert Fraser, qui a purgé une peine pour avoir été objecteur de conscience. Vivian va croiser Kay Langrish, une lesbienne butch qui vit recluse. Ressurgissent les souvenirs de 1944 quand Kay était une conductrice d’ambulance héroïque et qu’Hélène sortait avec Kay avant qu’elle ne la présente à son ex, Julia. Vivian avait avorté illégalement et Kay l’avait alors sauvée des poursuites…
