Rick Thorne est un juge itinérant dans le grand Ouest des Etats-Unis. En arrivant à Bannerman, il réalise qu'une puissante et dangereuse famille fait la loi en ville. Coupables de nombreux délits et crimes, ils n'ont jamais été poursuivis par la Justice ou envoyés en prison. Rick décide que cela ne peut plus durer car la loi s'applique pour tout le monde. Il va donc réouvrir une affaire classée trop rapidement sans suite selon lui...
