Chine, à l'époque médiévale. Les clans Liang et Wei s'opposent depuis des années, se livrant une guerre sans fin. Au cours d'une bataille, un fantassin parvient à capturer un général de l'armée adverse et compte le livrer à ses supérieurs, pour obtenir gloire et fortune. Les deux ennemis s'engagent alors dans un long voyage jusqu'au quartier général. Un périple qui sera semé d'embûches et de pièges.
