Emprisonné pour un meurtre qu'il n'a pas commis, John Brant s'évade et s'enfuit vers l'Ouest. Poursuivi par un shérif, il parvient à lui fausser compagnie, et se lie avec une bande de hors-la-loi, dont il devient l'ami. Il découvre que Jones, l'un des bandits, est l'auteur du crime pour lequel il a été emprisonné, mais celui-ci ignorait que quelqu'un avait été condamné à sa place. Brant est prêt à pardonner et à oublier. Mais le destin en décidera autrement, et Brant sera obligé d'affronter Jones...
