Joe Young est un gorille géant, qui vit au coeur des montagnes Pangani d'Afrique centrale. Orphelin, il a reporté toute son affection sur l'intrépide Jill Young, dont la mère est tombée avec la sienne sous les balles des braconniers. Jill pressent que son dévouement ne suffira pas à écarter les menaces qui pèsent sur son ami, et se laisse convaincre par le zoologue Gregg d'installer Joe dans une réserve californienne, à l'abri des chasseurs et braconniers.
