En 1933, lors de la grande depression, la famille Kurlander tente de survivre dans un hotel de passage. Peu a peu la famille se disloque et Mr. Kurlander, l'un des derniers a partir pour un autre Etat, assure a Aaron son jeune fils qui reste sur place qu'il a pris les dispositions necessaires pour lui assurer gite et couvert. Aaron va vite s'apercevoir qu'il a ete en fait abandonne. Pour le jeune garcon, commence une epreuve de verite dont l'issue decidera de son avenir d'homme.
