En 1885, Jane Callahan, seduisante Americaine, part pour la Russie. Au cours de son voyage, elle fait la connaissance d'Andrey Tolstoi, jeune cadet avec lequel elle partage le meme amour pour la musique. A Moscou Jane retrouve Douglas McCracken, un inventeur qui tente de vendre aux Russes une imposante machine a deboiser. Il demande a Jane, qu'il fait passer pour sa fille, de seduire le general Radlov, qui peut lui amener le marche. Ce dernier tombe sous le charme de Jane et, ignorant les sentiments que Tolstoi eprouve pour la jeune femme, il demande au cadet de l'accompagner chez Jane.
