1890. Une nuit, Georges Randa décide de revenir sur sa carrière de voleur. Orphelin sous la tutelle de son oncle, il revient à Paris, où il pense épouser Charlotte, sa cousine. Ne l'attendent que ses désillusions : l'oncle a détourné sa fortune et sa cousine est promise à un autre. Par dépit et par vengeance, il vole des bijoux et s'enfuit. Georges rencontre l'abbé La Margelle qui dirige une bande de truands, à Bruxelles. Il devient rapidement une figure importante des milieux interlopes.
