Sandro, douze ans, est le fils unique d'un riche industriel, Bruno. Sa mère travaille également dans l'entreprise familiale, elle occupe un poste administratif.
Une nuit, lors d'une croisière en Méditerrannée, Sandro tombe à la mer. Bien que son entourage le croit mort, il est sauvé de la noyade grâce à un bateau d'immigrés clandestins qui le recueille à bord. Il y fait la connaissance de Radu, un jeune roumain de dix-sept ans, qui s'est jeté à l'eau pour le sauver. Durant le voyage de retour vers l'Italie, Sandro va découvrir un monde différent et mesurer ses capacités à s'adapter à un nouvel univers.
