A New York, au cours d'un dîner entre amis, deux auteurs, l'un de tragédies l'autrede comédies, se remettent en question : "L'existence humaine n'a en vérité rien dedrôle, elle est pathétique", dit le premier. "Pas d'accord, répond l'autre. Si lesphilosophes disent de la vie qu'elle est absurde, c'est parce qu'on finit toujourspar en rire, et que nous en avons besoin !"

Prenons le personnage de Melinda par exemple : cette jolie jeune femme déboussoléefait irruption dans un dîner mondain. Elle s'incruste dans la vie de deux couples, suscitant ici la tentation de l'infidélité, là une délicieuse passion amoureuse. Melinda va révéler l'érosion de leurs sentiments et leurs difficultés à communiquer.
