Un homme de 54 ans sort de prison de Corrientes, en Argentine. Il veut retrouver sa fille devenue adulte qui vit dans une région isolée et marécageuse. Pour y accéder, il lui faudra parcourir de grandes distances sur une petite embarcation sillonnant les cours d'eau à travers une jungle impénétrable.
Vargas est un homme silencieux et retenu, qui possède la réserve de ceux qui côtoient la nature de près. Il se dégage de lui, des lieux qu'il parcourt et des gens qu'il croise un profond mystère émanant de ce monde immuable et resté presque intact après ses longues années d'incarcération.
