Pour la très belle Camilla Lopez, le seul moyen d'échapper à sa condition est d'épouser un riche américain ; mais sa rencontre avec Arturo Bandini, fils d'immigrants italiens, va tout compliquer. Pour sa part, il rêve de devenir un romancier célèbre et d'épouser une superbe blonde...
Elle, mexicaine, et lui, américain, voient leurs communautés prêtes à s'affronter pendant qu'ils se heurtent, combattant leur époque, la ville et leurs propres limites, à la poursuite de leur destin...
