En 1880, à Paris, le hasard met en présence deux anciens compagnons d'armes, Charles Forestier, devenu journaliste pour la "Vie française", et Georges Duroy, désoeuvré depuis qu'il a quitté le sixième régiment de hussards. Forestier invite Duroy à imiter son exemple et le met même en contact avec son patron, monsieur Walter, lors d'un dîner. Duroy n'obtient qu'une vague promesse. Tout en pensant à la belle Clotilde de Marelle, rencontrée en même temps que Walter, Duroy éprouve les plus grandes difficultés pour écrire son premier article. Forestier lui conseille alors de montrer sa prose à sa femme, Madeleine, dont Duroy comprend qu'elle est le véritable auteur des articles de son mari...
