Après une mission périlleuse sur l'île de Navarone, le major Mallory et le sergent Miller, membres d'un commando des forces américaines, doivent se rendre en Yougoslavie afin d'y éliminer un traître au service des Allemands. Mais l'avion qui les transporte est touché par un obus et contraint à se poser de toute urgence. Les deux hommes sont alors capturés par l'ennemi mais, décidés à mener à bien leur mission, vont tout mettre en œuvre pour s'évader et rejoindre la Résistance.
