Alors que les Noirs américains sont toujours sous la coupe de planteurs esclavagistes des Etats du Sud, Amantha Starr découvre, à la mort de son père, qu'elle a du sang noir dans les veines. Les terres de son père tombent aux mains de l'affairiste Calloway et Amantha est emmenée comme esclave. Elle est finalement vendue à un riche planteur, Hamish Bond, qui va la considérer comme une amie et non comme une esclave. La guerre de Sécession éclate. Hamish offre sa liberté à Amantha, mais la jeune femme préfère rester auprès de lui. Traqués par les Yankees, ils s'enfuient pour aller ailleurs vivre heureux.
