1912. Alors qu'il prepare l'union de sa fille, Catherine, avec le jeune Watherstone, Arthur Winslow est tout a coup accapare par un autre probleme. Il n'a pas derobe le mandat postal de cinq shillings. Des lors, Arthur va consacrer toute ses forces a lever les charges qui pesent sur son fils. Ce qui signifie qu'il va devoir lutter contre l'Amiraute et la Couronne qui, selon la loi, ne peuvent pas se tromper.
