En mai 1968, un avocat, Jean-Philippe Duroc, quitte Paris afin de rendre visite à son client en prison, Martial Gaulard. Accusé de meurtre, il lui annonce que son pourvoi en cassation a été rejeté, faisant de lui un condamné à la peine capitale. Alors qu'il apprend la terrible nouvelle, une mutinerie éclate : Gaulard en profite pour s'échapper, entraînant avec lui, son pauvre avocat dans une véritable course poursuite.
