Fraîchement diplômé, Herbert Heebert découvre que sa fiancée le trompe avec un autre. Écoeuré, il se jure de ne plus entendre parler des femmes. Sa misogynie est telle que toute présence féminine lui est intolérable. Suite à un malentendu, il se retrouve engagé comme homme à tout faire dans une pension de jeunes filles dirigée par une ancienne cantatrice. S'il cherche d'abord à fuir cette véritable maison de poupées, le faux macho multiplie rapidement les catastrophes et reçoit finalement, grâce à sa maladresse, sa candeur et sa sensibilité, l'affection des charmantes et excentriques demoiselles du pensionnat. Pour son deuxième film comme réalisateur, Jerry Lewis livre une comédie drôle, inventive et énergique dans un décor gigantesque.
