Dans cette biographie précise et inhabituelle, le truand Al Capone arrive à Chicago à la veille de la prohibition pour être le garde du corps du trafiquant Johnny Torrio. La progressive prise de pouvoir de Capone dans le gang s'accompagne d'une série de meurtres, d'actes d'extortion et de fraudes politiques. Il prend alors la tête de la plus grosse "affaire" de Chicago, mais déjà le déclin de son pouvoir s'amorce et une fin horrible l'attend.
