Les Buckingham dirigent une petite troupe de théâtre britannique qui parcourt l'Inde pour donner des représentations de pièces de Shakespeare. De ville en ville, de village en village, les Buckingham voient le pays se métamorphoser sous leurs yeux. Tandis que les anciens maharajas deviennent propriétaires d'hôtels, le théâtre perd peu à peu de son prestige au profit des films de Bollywood, et le sport remplace la culture classique. C'est alors que Lizzie, la fille adolescente de la famille, tombe amoureuse de Sanju, un Indien. Manjula, une autre actrice, est jalouse. Pour son deuxième film, James Ivory s'est inspiré des voyages de Geoffrey Kendal et de sa fille, à qui il a confié les rôles principaux.
