Nick Charles ne craint pas d'emmener sa femme, Nora, et sa chienne Asta, dans sa petite ville natale de Sycamore Springs, pour y célébrer son anniversaire avec ses parents. Nora ne tarde pas à découvrir que son beau-père ne s'est jamais tout à fait remis de voir son fils renoncer à sa carrière de médecin. Déterminée à lui prouver que Nick est parvenu à l'excellence dans son domaine, elle l'encourage à mener une enquête à Sycamore Springs. Pendant ce temps, la rumeur du retour de Nick se répand. Edgar Draque s'en inquiète. Convaincu que Nick enquête secrètement sur ses activités clandestines d'espion, il tente d'en faire disparaître les preuves. Le coscénariste attitré de Capra, Robert Riskin, signe cet épatant épisode.
