Nick et Nora Charles profitent de leurs loisirs pour passer l'après-midi aux courses. Le lieutenant Abrams, un vieil ami de Nick, leur apprend qu'un jockey, Gomez, a été assassiné. Sa réputation de détective est telle que Nick a bien du mal à convaincre policiers et reporters, présents sur les lieux, qu'il n'est absolument pas en train d'enquêter sur cette affaire. Il suffit pourtant des confidences d'un autre jockey, murmurant à l'oreille de Nick que Gomez a perdu la vie parce qu'il refusait de truquer une course, pour piquer la curiosité de l'ancien détective. Prié de prendre l'enquête en main, Nick refuse tout de go, préférant emmener Nora assister à un match de catch. L'un des épisodes les plus réussis d'une série par ailleurs toujours réjouissante.
