Après avoir brillamment résolu l'énigme posée par la disparition d'un riche inventeur new-yorkais, Nick Charles et sa femme Nora sont de retour dans leur maison de San Francisco qu'ils ont la surprise de découvrir peuplée d'un groupe de fêtards qu'ils ne connaissent pas. A contrecoeur, Nick accepte l'invitation à dîner de la tante de Nora, Katherine. Selma, une cousine de Nora, leur apprend que son mari, Robert, n'a pas donné signe de vie depuis trois jours. Toujours en traînant les pieds, Nick consent à enquêter discrètement. Il commence ses investigations par une boîte de nuit où il est certain de pouvoir boire les cocktails qu'il affectionne. Un mélange de comédie et de suspense policier adroitement conduit. Un classique.
