Au Nouveau-Mexique, à la fin du XIXe siècle, John Simpson Chisum, possède la plupart des terres du comté et ne compte qu'un seul ennemi : Lawrence Murphy, qui détient tous les petits commerces du coin. Avec l'aide de Pat Garrett, un nouveau venu originaire du Texas, Chisum décide d'attaquer Murphy sur son propre terrain en ouvrant à son tour des boutiques pour le concurrencer. C'est alors, le début d'une guerre ouverte qui déchire la ville...
