Dans un immeuble parisien, Zao, un vieux cuisinier chinois, fait la rencontre de Sarah, une jeune actrice australienne visiblement préoccupée, qui vient d'emménager en face de chez lui. Lorsqu'elle lui révèle son projet de se suicider, il lui propose de lui cuisiner des plats chinois raffinés jusqu'au jour fatidique. C'est ainsi que naît entre eux une relation forte, ambiguë et subtilement érotique, sous les regards inquisiteurs et envieux des autres habitants.
