Une jeune et jolie Française, Louise Créteur, se présente comme bonne à la 'Villa des Roses', une vieille pension située au coeur de Paris. L'arrivée de Louise représente un agréable changement dans la routine quotidienne des pensionnaires, un mélange de petits bourgeois et d'aventuriers fatigués. L'un après l'autre, les pensionnaires masculins cherchent à séduire la nouvelle bonne, et parmi eux Richard Grünewald, un jeune homme affable et dont les tentatives d'approche sont plus subtiles et mieux intentionnées. Mais le drame n'est pas loin...
