Joanna rejoint au Brésil l'homme qu'elle a épousé dans le cadre dun mariage arrangé. Son mari se montre très distant avec elle et ne pense qu'à s'occuper de sa plantation de cacao. D'ailleurs, il apprend un jour que des millions de Marabunta, une espèce de fourmis, sont en passe d'infester et donc de détruire son exploitation. Joanna se montre alors d'un soutien sans faille afin de trouver une solution au problème.
