Né le jour de la fête nationale, Johnny Sims incarne le rêve américain et son désenchantement. Il porte les espoirs d'un père, qu'il perd à douze ans, tente sa chance à New-York à vingt-deux ans, passe ses week-ends à Coney island, se marie, va en Lune de miel aux chutes du Niagara, gagne un concours de slogans publicitaires, fait des enfants. Le malheur frappe cependant le couple, lorsque leur fille meurt renversée par un camion. Alors commence la déchéance de Johnny.
