Suède, à la toute fin du 19ème siècle. Pour échapper à la misère, le jeune Pelle et son vieux père, Lasse, embarquent pour le Danemark où ils espèrent connaître une vie meilleure. À peine y sont-ils arrivés qu’ils prennent conscience que l’existence sera difficile là aussi, que les immigrés comme eux n’y ont aucun droit, sinon courber l’échine et travailler dans des conditions épouvantables contre quelques sous.
