Une escouade de 48 hommes emmenée par le lieutenant Gibbs est envoyée pour masquer la réalité de ce repli. Les hommes doivent tenir bon face à l'ennemi et dans le froid. Le caporal Denno voit ses supérieurs mourir les uns après les autres et doit alors prendre en charge le commandement de l'unité dont il fait partie.
