C'est le début de la construction du Mur de Berlin, un mur destiné à empêcher les Allemands de l'est de fuir vers l'ouest. Harry Melchior, un champion de natation de la RDA, veut fuir l'oppression communiste mais refuse de laisser sa soeur Lotte.
Il prend finalement la décision de partir et fait la promesse à Lotte qu'il reviendra la chercher. Il réussit à traverser la frontière avec des faux papiers.
Harry est désormais libre mais une idée l'obsède : sauver sa soeur. Avec son meilleur ami, Matthis, un ingénieur, celui-ci élabore un plan ambitieux : creuser un tunnel sous le Mur.
