Jean Vereecken est un ouvrier belge de quarante ans, à la vie morne, et dont la fille Marva passe le plus clair de son temps à imiter des stars de la chanson. Celle-ci participe sans grand succès à des concours de chant. Willy, un jeune collègue de Jean, rêve lui aussi d'une autre vie, faite de richesse et de gloire.
Mais lorsque l'usine, qui fait vivre la région, annonce sa fermeture, leur univers s'écroule. Déterminé à faire accéder Marva à la plus haute marche du podium, Jean organise l'enlèvement de la célèbre chanteuse Debbie et embarque Willy dans l'aventure. Michael, l'agent de la vedette, s'aperçoit qu'il a affaire à des amateurs et propose un marché à Jean : il fera de sa fille une star à condition que celui-ci garde Debbie en otage pendant un certain temps.
