Au XVè siècle, sous la France de Louis XI, ce dernier autorise une foire annuelle de danseurs et baladins sur le parvis de Notre-Dame et à cette occasion l’alchimiste Claude Frollo rencontre la belle bohémienne Esmeralda. Il s'en éprend et demande au bossu Quasimodo de l'enlever sans se douter qu’interviendraient le poète Gringoire et le capitaine des archers Phoebus, tous deux également amoureux d'Esmeralda.
