A Sfax, Fatma, une adolescente de 17 ans dont la mère est décédée, vit dans une maison avec son père, ses frères, ses soeurs et un cousin, Taher, hébergé pour quelque temps. Une nuit, celui-ci la viole.
La jeune fille choisit de se taire et la vie continue. Après avoir obtenu son bac, Fatma part étudier à Tunis. Nommée institutrice à Soundous, un petit village retiré du Sud, elle fait la connaissance d'Aziz, un jeune et brillant médecin dont elle tombe amoureuse. Mais la société traditionnelle dans laquelle ils vivent fragilise leur relation.
