Germaine est femme de ménage. Elle a trois clients, qui ont chacun des secrets : Liéthard, banquier, pique dans la caisse pour se payer les services d'une prostituée , Francine, productrice de télévision, participait autrefois à des ballets roses , enfin, Gruson, éducateur, arrondit ses fins de mois en figurant dans un spectacle de travestis. Germaine va par hasard avoir vent de toutes ses vies parallèles, et, trop bavarde, va entraîner une chaîne de chantage... A la façon d'Hitchcock, on peut voir Michel Audiard faire une apparition dans le film, dans le rôle d'un preneur de son sur un plateau de télévision.
