Un ranch de Californie du Nord est isolé depuis plusieurs semaines par les rigueurs de l'hiver. Au sein de la maison, tenue par la matriarche Ma Bridges, les conflits font rage. Son mari alcoolique et sa fille Grace assistent impuissants aux affrontements entre les fils, Harold et Curt, qui se disputent les faveurs de la ravissante Gwen. Les deux jeunes hommes montent bientôt une expédition pour tuer une panthère qui décime leur troupeau. Au cours de celle-ci, Harold est tué par le félin. Curt, considéré par sa famille comme responsable de la mort de son frère, se lance seul à la poursuite de l'animal. Produit par John Wayne, ce western, l'un des derniers films de William Wellman, est servi par une esthétique et un ton résolument originaux.
