Dave et Emma forment le couple parfait : deux enfants, une belle maison, des boulots épanouissants. A l’occasion de leur septième anniversaire de mariage et pour pimenter le quotidien, ils ont l’idée de jouer à un petit jeu de rôle. Ils se retrouveront dans un hôtel new-yorkais, comme de parfaits étrangers qui se rencontrent pour la première fois. Mais au lieu du bel « inconnu » qu’elle attend, Emma est abordée par un homme d’un certain âge, assez mystérieux. Le lendemain, l’homme est retrouvé mort et la police ouvre une enquête. Le jeu de rôle dérape. La police suspecte le couple et Emma disparaît.
