Ning, jeune collecteur de créances, parcourt pendant deux ans la Chine moyenâgeuse avec son chien Lingot d'or. Il aime Lan, mais celle-ci, lassée de ne pas le voir aussi souvent qu'elle le souhaite, s'est fiancée avec un autre. Ning est désemparé.
C'est au cours d'un voyage qu'il rencontre enfin l'amour en la personne de Qian, une femme fantôme qui lui sauve la vie à plusieurs reprises. Perdu dans le monde des morts, Ning apprend à surmonter sa peur pour braver les dangers qui le guettent.
