Le Raj Mahal est un piteux hôtel qui s'est transformé avec le temps en résidence pour personnes âgées. Cet hôtel, situé en bordure des plages chaudes de Miami, abrite quatre pensionnaires peu ordinaires : Joey "Bats" Pistella (Burt Reynolds ; Boogie Nights), Tony "The Mouth" Donato (Seymour Cassel ; Proposition indécente), Bobby Bartellemeo (Richard Dreyfuss ; Etroite surveillance) et Mike "The Brick" Donatelli (Dan Hedaya ; Hurricane Carter).
Autrefois, ces quatre larons formaient un groupe de redoutables truands ; aujourd'hui, ils ne sont plus que de vieilles loques qui se font dorer au soleil. Ils sont alors menacés d'expulsion, car le vulgaire édifice dans lequel ils ont élu domicile fait tache à côté de cette formidable plage qui s'étale devant lui. Aussi doit-il être rénové pour aller de pair avec son environnement et attirer une clientèle plus distinguée.
Malgré leur âge, les brigands ont conservé leur instinct de survie. Un plan de défense pour sauver leur résidence a été élaboré et devrait être facile à mener à terme. Du moins, il aurait été facile. Cependant, leur savoir-faire n'est plus ce qu'il était et les maladresses s'accumulent.
Cette comédie réalisée par Michael Dinner, auteur des séries télé Chicago Hope et Les années coup de coeur, met en scène Burt Reynolds et Richard Dreyfuss, deux acteurs qui ont déjà eu l'occasion de jouer les gangsters minables dans Mad Dogs.
